New fabrics with strong heat dissipation similar to polyethylene plastic

Researchers at Stanford University in the United States have developed a new type of fabric that has better heat dissipation than any current natural or synthetic fabric. They wrote in the "Science" magazine that wearing clothes made of such fabrics in the summer would feel cool and comfortable even in an environment without air conditioning. There are also some fabrics on the market that can effectively evaporate the sweat to reduce the body temperature. The new fabric uses a completely different cooling mechanism: it promotes heat dissipation by reducing infrared radiation barriers.

This new type of fabric is somewhat similar to our daily use of kitchen plastic polyethylene. Kitchen plastics have an important property that allows infrared radiation to pass through, but it is impervious to water and transparent and cannot be used to make clothes at all. Stanford University researchers have used nanotechnology, photonics technology, and chemical technology to make up for these deficiencies in polyethylene.

They found a polyethylene material commonly used in battery manufacturing that has a special nanostructure that is opaque under visible light but does not block infrared radiation. The researchers then used a harmless chemical to make them water-permeable, allowing water vapor molecules to pass through the nanopores of the material. In this way, the improved new material has three basic conditions as a clothing fabric: opaque in visible light, water permeable and air permeable, allowing heat radiation to pass through.

In order to make this lightweight material more like a fabric, the researchers designed a three-layer structure with a certain strength and thickness: two layers of polyethylene separated by a cotton net.

The researchers pointed out that all objects, including the human body, radiate heat in the form of infrared radiation. Clothing will limit the discharge of body heat and make the skin feel warmer. Therefore, the clothing with heat-dissipating function is the first choice for clothing in summer. . Compared with the same thickness of cotton cloth, the new fabric has better heat dissipation performance: clothes made of new fabrics will be two degrees Celsius lower than those of cotton cloths.

The researchers said that the new research has opened up a new way of studying cooling or heating technology: without using external energy sources, the aim is to change the infrared radiation penetration of the material. To make new fabrics more like clothing fabrics, more work is needed, such as adding more colors and textures. Perhaps in the near future, people can wear cool and cool air-conditioned clothes to spend the summer.
