The Zhengzhou Abrasives Grinding Research Institute, commonly known as "Sanmao," was established on June 12, 1958. Initially located at No. 121 Huashan Road in Zhengzhou, the institute has since moved to No. 121 Wutong Street in the Gaoxin District. The research and production area spans 66,690 square meters (equivalent to 100 acres), with a construction area of 29,980 square meters and a planned total construction area of 64,000 square meters. As the sole comprehensive research and development institution in China's abrasives industry, Sanmao is directly affiliated with the former Ministry of Machinery Industry. It plays a vital role in researching, developing, and providing technical support for the country’s abrasives sector.
In 1999, Sanmao transitioned into the China National Machinery Industry Group Co., Ltd., becoming a high-tech enterprise that integrates research, development, production, sales, and consulting services. Over the past 55 years, it has achieved over 1,270 research outcomes, with nearly 150 winning national, provincial, and ministerial-level science and technology awards. More than 550 achievements have been widely promoted and applied across the country, significantly contributing to the growth of China’s superhard materials and abrasive industries.
One of its most notable milestones was in 1960 when Sanmao took on the national project to develop synthetic diamonds, known as "Project 121." On December 6, 1963, it successfully created China’s first synthetic diamond. In 1965, it collaborated with Jinan Casting and Forging Design to complete the first hinged six-sided diamond synthesis press. The following year, it developed resin, bronze, and electroplated bond diamond grinding wheels. In 1967, it introduced China’s first cubic boron nitride (CBN), and in 1968, it developed the manufacturing process for synthetic diamond micro-powder. From 1970 onward, it launched specialized equipment and testing instruments, and by 1975, it had produced the first synthetic diamond polycrystalline (PCD). In 1978, it successfully developed the first cubic boron nitride polycrystalline (PCBN).
Sanmao also established the first synthetic diamond intermediate test base, conducting extensive tests on superhard materials and products such as grinding, trimming, cutting, and drilling. It played a key role in training professionals from various sectors, laying a strong foundation for the rapid development of the superhard materials industry in China. Its contributions were recognized with multiple awards, including the National Science Conference Award, the Machinery Industry Science Conference Award, and the Henan Science Conference Award.
Since the institutional reform, Sanmao has focused on talent development, cultivating a team of skilled professionals, including 196 technicians, 120 middle and senior-level professionals, 13 senior engineers with professor-level titles, and 19 experts who receive special government allowances. The institute collaborates with domestic and international research institutions and universities, aiming to solve critical technological challenges through joint efforts.
With a development strategy centered on "independent innovation, key breakthroughs, sustainable development, and leading the industry," Sanmao targets sectors like electronics, automotive, aerospace, and consumer goods. It has developed a range of high-speed, high-efficiency, and precision superhard materials tools, achieving several key technological breakthroughs. Notable projects include "high-precision ultra-thin and ultra-hard material grinding tools," "high-efficiency ceramic CBN grinding tools for automotive parts," and "silicon wafer thinning grinding wheels." These innovations have led to 6 national new product certifications, 11 high-tech products, and 30 patents.
Under the leadership of Zhu Feng, Sanmao experienced significant growth, with annual revenue increasing from 92 million yuan in 2010 to 225 million yuan in 2012. Despite economic challenges, this growth demonstrated strong performance in a difficult market environment.
Sanmao is also home to several key technical organizations, such as the National Superhard Materials and Products Engineering Technology Research Center, the National Abrasives Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, and the Machinery Industry Superhard Materials Engineering Research Center. These institutions play a crucial role in advancing the industry’s technological progress.
Looking ahead, Sanmao is part of the SINOMACH Seiko Group, which aims to reach an output value of 3 billion yuan within three years and 7 billion yuan within five years. This strategic expansion offers new opportunities for Sanmao to continue driving innovation and shaping the future of China’s abrasive and superhard materials industry.
