Basic Knowledge of the Equipment for Cylindrical Hole SKF Bearings
When installing cylindrical hole SKF bearings, it's essential to use the correct methods to ensure smooth operation and long service life. The most common method is using a press, which involves carefully pressing the bearing onto the shaft. A pad is placed on the inner ring, and the press is used to apply even pressure until the inner ring reaches the shoulder of the shaft. This prevents damage to the raceway, which can occur if the bearing is improperly pressed or if excessive force is applied.
It’s important to lubricate the contact surfaces before installation to reduce friction and prevent damage. If a hammer must be used, it should only be applied to the inner ring with a protective sleeve to avoid direct impact. However, this method is only suitable for bearings with low interference fits. It should not be used for large or medium-sized bearings, as improper installation can lead to serious issues.
For deep groove ball bearings and other non-separable types, both the inner and outer rings require an interference fit. In such cases, it's best to use a pad and apply pressure through a screw or hydraulic press. This ensures that the bearing is evenly seated without damaging the raceways. For tapered roller bearings and cylindrical roller bearings, which are separable, the inner and outer rings can be installed separately onto the shaft and housing. However, care must be taken to align them properly to avoid misalignment during installation, which could cause raceway damage.
For larger bearings that are difficult to press into place, the hot mounting method is often used. This involves heating the bearing in oil to expand it slightly, making it easier to install onto the shaft. This method avoids applying excessive force directly to the bearing, reducing the risk of damage. When using this technique, certain precautions should be followed:
- Do not heat the bearing above 120°C, as this can damage the material properties.
- Place the bearing on a metal grid or lift it slightly in the oil to prevent direct contact with the bottom of the tank.
- Heat the bearing 20–30°C above the required installation temperature to ensure it remains warm during assembly.
- After installation, allow the bearing to cool naturally. As it cools, it will contract, so use a shaft nut or another appropriate method to secure it properly.
- Ensure there is no gap between the inner ring and the bearing shoulder to maintain proper alignment.
Proper installation techniques are crucial when working with SKF bearings, especially since they are precision-engineered components. Any mistakes during installation can lead to premature wear, vibration, or failure. Always follow manufacturer guidelines and use the right tools and methods to ensure optimal performance and longevity of the bearing.
