The Zhengzhou Abrasives Grinding Research Institute, commonly known as "Sanmao," was established on June 12, 1958. Initially located at No. 121 Huashan Road in Zhengzhou, the institute has since relocated to No. 121 Wutong Street, Gaoxin District, Zhengzhou City. The research and production area spans 66,690 square meters (equivalent to 100 acres), with a construction area of 29,980 square meters and a planned total construction area of 64,000 square meters. As the only comprehensive research and development institution in China’s abrasives industry, Sanmao was directly affiliated with the former Ministry of Machinery Industry, focusing on the research, development, and technical support for the national abrasives sector.
In 1999, the institute transitioned into the China National Machinery Industry Group Co., Ltd., evolving into a high-tech enterprise that integrates research, development, production, sales, and consulting services. Over the past 55 years, Sanmao has achieved more than 1,270 research outcomes, with nearly 150 receiving national, provincial, or ministerial-level scientific and technological awards. Over 550 achievements have been widely promoted and applied across the country, making significant contributions to the growth of China’s superhard materials and abrasive industries.
One of its most notable milestones came in 1960 when it took on the national synthetic diamond project, designated as “Problem Code 121.†On December 6, 1963, Sanmao successfully developed China’s first synthetic diamond. In 1965, it collaborated with Jinan Casting and Forging Design to complete the first hinged six-sided diamond synthesis press. In 1964, it introduced resin, bronze, and electroplated bond diamond grinding wheels. By 1967, it had developed China’s first cubic boron nitride (CBN), followed by the development of synthetic diamond micro-powder manufacturing technology in 1968. Since 1970, the institute has created specialized equipment and testing instruments, and in 1975, it successfully developed the first synthetic diamond polycrystalline (PCD). In 1978, it launched the first cubic boron nitride polycrystalline (PCBN).
Sanmao also pioneered the establishment of a synthetic diamond intermediate test base, conducting extensive tests on superhard materials and products such as grinding, trimming, cutting, and drilling. It played a key role in the design and construction of the sixth diamond wheel factory in China and trained thousands of professionals from various industries, laying a strong foundation for the rapid development of the superhard materials sector.
Since the system reform, Sanmao has focused on talent cultivation, building a team of skilled researchers and engineers. Currently, it employs 196 technicians, including 120 with middle- and senior-level professional titles, 13 senior engineers with professor-level qualifications, and 19 experts who receive special allowances from the State Council. The institute actively collaborates with domestic and international research institutions, promoting joint efforts in research, education, and innovation to solve key industry challenges.
Adhering to a strategy of "independent innovation, key breakthroughs, sustainable development, and leading the industry," Sanmao targets sectors such as electronics, automotive, aerospace, and household appliances. It has developed advanced superhard materials tools, breaking through multiple key technologies and achieving numerous high-level results. Projects like "high-precision ultra-thin and ultra-hard material grinding tools," "high-efficiency ceramic CBN grinding tools for automotive parts," and "silicon wafer thinning grinding wheels" have earned 6 national new product awards and 11 high-tech product certifications, along with 30 patents. These innovations have significantly improved the industry's technical level and reduced reliance on imported high-end precision superhard materials.
Under the leadership of Zhu Feng, Sanmao experienced rapid growth. In 2010, the institute generated 92 million yuan in revenue, rising to 192 million in 2011 and 225 million in 2012—despite a slowing macroeconomic environment and reduced market demand. This performance highlighted its resilience and strategic strength.
Sanmao is also the core of several national and industry-level organizations, including the National Superhard Materials and Products Engineering Technology Research Center and the National Abrasives Quality Supervision and Inspection Center. It plays a crucial role in advancing industrial technology and driving development. With ongoing projects like the Mechanical Industry Superhard Abrasive Engineering Laboratory and the Henan Provincial Key Laboratory of High-Performance Superhard Materials, Sanmao continues to strengthen its position as a leader in the field.
By 2012, SINOMACH had provided a modern planning and equipment platform for the Sixth Design and Research Institute of Machinery Industry, initiating an innovation platform for Sanmao. The reorganized Baige Abrasives Co., Ltd., and the China Abrasives Import and Export Corporation formed a production and marketing platform, enabling the full integration of science, industry, and trade. With ambitious goals to reach 3 billion yuan in output value within three years and 7 billion yuan within five years, Sanmao is poised for even greater success. The future looks bright for Sanmao, as its team remains committed to overcoming challenges, embracing innovation, and continuing to shape the future of China’s abrasives industry.
