When installing cylindrical hole SKF bearings, there are several common methods used depending on the size and type of bearing. One of the most commonly used techniques is pressing the bearing into place using a press. This method involves placing a pad on the inner ring and carefully pressing it until it stops against the shaft shoulder. It’s important to ensure that the pressure is evenly applied to avoid damaging the raceway surface. If the inner ring is not properly aligned or if too much force is applied, it can lead to indentations or even crushing of the raceway, which can significantly reduce the bearing's lifespan.
For smaller bearings with a light interference fit, this method is usually sufficient. However, for larger bearings or those with a tighter fit, it’s better to use oil or hydraulic pressure to assist in the installation. This ensures even distribution of force and minimizes the risk of damage.
In cases where a hammer must be used, it should only be applied to the inner ring pad, never directly to the bearing itself. This practice is often avoided because improper striking can cause internal damage, especially in high-precision bearings like SKF deep groove ball bearings, which are not designed to be disassembled easily.
For bearings such as SKF cylindrical roller bearings or tapered roller bearings, which are separable, the inner and outer rings can be installed separately onto the shaft and housing. However, during this process, it’s crucial to keep both components aligned and stable to prevent misalignment, which could lead to premature wear or damage to the raceway surfaces.
Another effective method for large bearings is the hot mounting technique. When a bearing is heated in oil, it expands slightly, making it easier to slide onto the shaft. This method reduces the need for excessive force and helps prevent damage to the bearing. The recommended heating temperature should not exceed 120°C to avoid compromising the material properties of the bearing.
Important precautions when using the hot mounting method include:
- Avoid direct contact between the bearing and the bottom of the oil tank; instead, place it on a metal mesh or lift it slightly.
- Heat the bearing to 20–30°C above the desired installation temperature to ensure smooth fitting.
- After installation, allow the bearing to cool down naturally. As it cools, its width may contract, so it’s essential to secure it with a shaft nut or other suitable fastening method.
- Ensure there is no gap between the inner ring and the bearing shoulder to maintain proper alignment and performance.
Proper installation is critical for the longevity and performance of SKF bearings. A poorly installed bearing can lead to increased friction, vibration, and ultimately, failure. Always follow manufacturer guidelines and use the appropriate tools and techniques for each specific bearing type.
