Researchers accidentally invented a battery that could last for 400 years

A group of researchers from the University of California, Irvine, have unexpectedly invented batteries that support 200,000 charge cycles. This discovery may have brought us closer to charging thousands of batteries without any replacement. Dr. Mya Le Thai, a Ph.D. student who is the leader of the research team, inadvertently coated a group of gold nanowires in manganese dioxide, and wrapped the organic glass-like electrolyte gel in the outer layer.

Gold nanowires typically degrade after 8,000 charge cycles, but in the cell invented by Mya Le Thai, the gold nanowires cycle and charge and discharge hundreds of thousands of times without losing their ability. The researchers suspect that gels allow the batteries to contain metals. Oxide plasticizes to increase battery life. A laptop's battery is usually rated for only a few hundred charge/discharge cycles, but if used, the lifespan can be at least 400 years. However, such nano-cells are still in the development stage and will still have a long way to go before they are commercialized.
