Where should the hard seal butterfly valve be used?

The hard-sealed butterfly valve is commonly used for throttling applications. However, improper operation can lead to cavitation, which may cause the rubber seat to degrade or even peel off, resulting in damage to the valve. To address this issue, metal-sealed butterfly valves have been developed internationally, significantly reducing the risk of cavitation. In recent years, China has also made progress in developing hard-sealed butterfly valves. Additionally, Japan has introduced a cam-shaped butterfly valve that is highly resistant to cavitation, with reduced vibration and noise levels. Under normal operating conditions, the service life of the sealing seat varies depending on the material. Rubber seats typically last between 15 to 20 years, while metal seats can last up to 80 to 90 years. However, the actual lifespan depends heavily on how the valve is used and the specific working environment. The relationship between the opening angle of a hard-sealed butterfly valve and the flow rate is generally linear. When used for flow control, its performance is closely related to the resistance within the piping system. For example, if two valves with the same diameter and design are installed in different piping systems, their flow characteristics may vary significantly due to differences in pipe loss coefficients. If a hard-sealed butterfly valve is operated at a large throttle position, the backside of the disc may be prone to cavitation, potentially causing damage. Therefore, it is generally recommended to use these valves outside of the 15° range for optimal performance. For better performance and reliability, high-performance butterfly valves, high-performance ball valves, or advanced hard-sealed butterfly valves are often recommended, especially in critical applications where precision and durability are essential.
