Timken bearing repair technology: another cost-effective option for replacing bearings

3. Bearing damage

Once the bearing is damaged, a very rigorous inspection process must be performed to determine if the damaged bearing can be repaired. The bearings to be repaired must be thoroughly cleaned and then subjected to a very rigorous and comprehensive inspection. The first is to detect the main damage of the bearing, such as the presence of cracks, large flaking and thermal discoloration. Bearings with these damages are likely to be repaired and must be scrapped.

3.1 The main type of damage of the bearing

The main reasons for bearing damage are as follows:

• Chemical damage: etching, rust, corrosion spots, rust or abrasion

• Thermal damage: discoloration or crack

• Current damage: burns, grooves or pitting

• Mechanical damage: fatigue, cracks, flaking, cracking, scratches, micro-flaking, stains, Brinell hardness, notches, wear, mounting damage, eccentricity or lubrication failure

3.2 Damage bearing performance

Through condition monitoring and routine inspection, it is possible to find out if there is a problem with the bearing operation. Careful inspection can help determine if the bearing needs to be repaired, for example:

• Whether the bearing has approached or exceeded the expected life

• Does the operating temperature exceed 200 degrees Fahrenheit (93.3 degrees Celsius)

• Is there excessive vibration in the bearing operation?

• Lubrication and temperature suddenly change

• Does the bearing have excessive running noise?

• Whether the bearing seal is damaged or not

A lot of information can describe the damage and provide some analysis of the causes that can help improve the use of subsequent bearings, but not the relationship between damage and repairability. Damage assessment and cause analysis can be performed at the same time as detailed testing.

4. Bearings that can be repaired

Although bearing repair has many benefits, repair is not always the best choice for damaged bearings. Proper use of bearing repair technology depends on whether the bearing needs repair, and which repair solution is best in terms of delivery and economy.

From the point of view of the repair tool, the limitations of the repair are the maximum and minimum dimensions of the bearing and the type of product. There are many different types of repair suppliers, ranging from small equipment with limited scope of work and knowledge to large bearing manufacturing with unlimited range of products and services.

The scope of repair also limits the size of the repairable bearing, but regardless of the original manufacturer, all types of bearings can be repaired, including:

• Tapered roller bearings

• Spherical roller bearings

• Cylindrical bearing

• Ball bearing

• Thrust bearing

• Crossed roller bearings, etc.
