The reporter learned from the Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences that the research group of Wu Zhengyan, a researcher at the Institute of Technical Biology of the Institute, has made important progress in the management of heavy metals from organic fertilizers. The research results provide a new idea for reducing the harm of heavy metals in organic fertilizers. It is of great significance to promote the use of livestock manure for fertilizer and sustainable development of the livestock industry. Due to the extensive addition of heavy metals in livestock feed, livestock manure usually contains a certain amount of heavy metal ions such as arsenic and copper. As a result, the heavy metals in the produced organic fertilizer exceed the standards and will cause serious damage to the environment and human body after application. The existence of this problem has become a key bottleneck restricting the utilization of livestock manure and the sustainable development of the aquaculture industry. There is an urgent need to develop a method to repair heavy metal ions in organic fertilizers.
Researchers use clay, biochar and other natural materials to prepare a functionalized nanocomposite. This material has a large number of active groups and can efficiently capture heavy metal ions such as arsenic and copper in organic fertilizers, effectively inhibiting its activity and toxicity. To prevent contact with crop roots, reduce the amount of enrichment in crops, and increase food security.
