Fibreboard, commonly referred to as MDF (Medium-Density Fibreboard), is a type of engineered wood product manufactured from wood fibers or other plant fibers bonded together with urea-formaldehyde resin or other appropriate adhesives. During its production, additional binders or additives may be incorporated to enhance its properties. One of the key benefits of fibreboard is its uniform composition, which ensures consistent strength across both longitudinal and transverse directions. This material is less prone to cracking and offers excellent versatility for various applications. To produce one cubic meter of fibreboard, approximately 2.5 to 3 cubic meters of raw wood are required. This equates to replacing roughly 3 cubic meters of sawn timber or 5 cubic meters of logs, making fibreboard an efficient way to maximize the use of forest resources.
Despite its advantages, fibreboard does have some limitations. A notable drawback is the presence of a mesh on the rear surface, which creates a disparity in the surface areas of the two sides of the board. When exposed to moisture, this imbalance can cause warping or distortion due to differing expansion rates. Additionally, the surface of a hardboard is quite rigid, making it challenging to drive nails into it, and its water resistance is relatively weak. On the other hand, dry fibreboard avoids these issues but tends to be more expensive. These factors should be considered when selecting materials for specific projects.
