Abstract Recently, the Chongqing Institute of Green Intelligent Technology, part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (commonly known as the Chongqing Research Institute), has successfully developed China's first 15-inch single-layer graphene film, marking a major breakthrough in domestic graphene technology. Graphene is a two-dimensional material made up of a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice. It offers exceptional electrical conductivity, mechanical strength, and transparency, making it a promising candidate for next-generation electronic devices.
This achievement not only represents a significant step forward in China’s graphene research but also paves the way for advanced flexible electronics. Unlike traditional touch screen materials such as indium tin oxide (ITO), graphene is not only thinner and more transparent but also highly durable and flexible. This means that future mobile devices could feature foldable or even rollable screens, revolutionizing how we interact with technology. The Chongqing Research Institute has already grown a uniform 15-inch single-layer graphene on copper foil and transferred it to flexible substrates like PET. They have further processed this material to create a 7-inch graphene-based touch panel. When tested on a regular laptop display, the graphene touch screen responded accurately to stylus input, demonstrating its practical potential. With the growing demand for large-size touchscreens in tablets and other devices, the market for graphene is expected to expand rapidly. Industry forecasts suggest that by 2015, the global demand for large touchscreen panels will reach 230 million units, with graphene playing a key role in this shift. To accelerate commercialization, Shanghai Nanjiang Group has partnered with the Chongqing Research Institute on a large-scale graphene industrialization project, backed by an initial investment of 267 million yuan. The project has already established a graphene production base in Chongqing, aiming to launch the first production line within a year and achieve a capacity of 10 million units annually. This development highlights the city's growing influence in the field of advanced materials and its commitment to driving innovation in the electronics industry.
