As the summer heat intensifies, mosquitoes are becoming more active, and the market for mosquito repellent products is booming. Recently, reporters noticed that some mosquito coils are now labeled as "safe for infants and children," leading many parents to purchase them to protect their kids from bites. However, industry experts caution that these so-called "child-safe" mosquito coils may not be as reliable as they seem.
The reporter visited a large supermarket in the development zone and found only two brands of electric mosquito coils marketed specifically for children. Priced at 32.9 yuan and 26.9 yuan respectively, these products were nearly twice as expensive as regular versions of the same size. On Taobao, the reporter discovered numerous listings for "insecticide coils," with one product selling over 1,104 units in just 30 days. The seller claimed, "This product contains no harmful chemicals and is especially suitable for infants and pregnant women."
However, according to current Chinese regulations, there is no official classification for mosquito coils based on age groups such as infants, children, or adults. The terms "child mosquito coils" or "baby mosquito-repellent tablets" are not officially recognized, making it difficult to ensure that these products meet the specific needs of young children. From this perspective, such labels are more of a marketing tactic than a genuine safety guarantee.
Dr. Qiao Yahong, a respiratory physician, emphasized that no mosquito repellent product can be completely non-toxic. While companies promote their products as "non-toxic," the fact that they repel mosquitoes means they must contain chemical ingredients. Most mosquito coils use pyrethroid insecticides, along with organic fillers, binders, and dyes. Long-term use can harm the respiratory system, and children, whose respiratory systems are still developing, are particularly vulnerable to the effects of these chemicals.
To protect children, Dr. Qiao recommended physical methods of mosquito control, such as installing window screens, using mosquito nets, and keeping doors closed. These measures help avoid the potential health risks associated with chemical-based repellents.
