Many families who are renovating their new homes often go for bright and vibrant colors to create an appealing atmosphere. However, these colorful paints may come with hidden health risks due to the presence of harmful substances like lead.

What is Lead Paint?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency defines lead paint as any paint containing more than 0.5% lead or 10 mg per square centimeter. In China, regulations state that interior wall coatings must not contain more than 90 mg/kg of soluble lead. Despite these standards, many products still fall short of these safety limits.

The Dangers of Lead Exposure

Experts warn that when lead from paint enters the body through breathing, eating, or skin contact, it can build up in the bloodstream and cause serious health issues, including anemia, memory loss, high blood pressure, and joint pain. A small piece of paint, about the size of a fingernail, can contain as much as 50 mg of lead — enough to be dangerous.

Children are especially vulnerable. According to the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention, one-third of children in China have excessive lead levels, with home decoration being a major source of exposure. At just 1 meter above the ground, lead concentrations in the air can be as high as 16 times greater than at 1.5 meters — the height where children often play. Young children also tend to touch walls and put their hands in their mouths, increasing the chance of ingesting lead. Their absorption rate of lead is five times higher than adults, making them far more susceptible to its effects.

Where Does Lead in Paint Come From?

Lead in paint typically comes from pigments such as red ochre, yellow ochre, and lead white. These compounds were historically used for their bright colors and long-lasting appearance. A study found that orange paint had the highest lead content, followed by yellow, green, and brown. The brighter the color, the more likely it was to contain harmful levels of lead.

How to Prevent Lead Poisoning

There are simple steps you can take to reduce the risk of lead poisoning. Regularly cleaning floors, window sills, and carpets can help remove dust that may contain lead particles. Encouraging children to wash their hands frequently, especially before meals, is crucial. Ensuring that their diet includes enough iron and calcium while limiting fat intake can also reduce lead absorption.

The Current Paint Market

Despite growing awareness, many paints on the Chinese market still contain organic pigments, and some brands promote themselves as "green." However, brightly colored paints continue to dominate the market, even though they often contain high levels of lead. While white paints generally have lower lead content, people tend to prefer more vivid colors, which can increase the risk of exposure.

Experts recommend choosing environmentally friendly paints and opting for lighter shades whenever possible. By making informed choices, consumers can significantly reduce the risk of lead pollution in their homes and protect their families’ health.

5mm RGB LED

5mm RGB LED is the most popular LED in Through-hole RGB LED.

Same as the 3mm RGB LED, 5mm RGB LED also have three chips in, four pins, common cathode or common anode and those chips can be placed arbitrarily.

The shape of the lens can be 5mm round RGB LED, 5mm Straw hat RGB LED, 5mm pointed top RGB LED and 5mm round LED without flange RGB LED.

For the 5mm RGB LED, the lens can be water clear or diffused. The former has a strong spotlight, and the later lens will make people feels soft.
