1) Concept
Composite Portland cement, abbreviated as P·C, is a type of hydraulic cementitious material that consists of Portland cement clinker, 15% to 50% of two or more types of industrial by-products or mineral admixtures, and an appropriate amount of gypsum. These materials are finely ground together to produce a versatile and cost-effective cement suitable for a wide range of construction applications.
2) Technical Requirements
The technical specifications for composite cement include fineness, initial setting time, and volume stability, which are similar to those of ordinary Portland cement. However, the final setting time must not exceed 12 hours. Based on its compressive and flexural strength at 3 days and 28 days, composite cement is classified into three strength grades: 32.5, 42.5, and 52.5. Each grade further has two types: normal and early-strength, offering flexibility in different construction conditions.
3) Basic Performance and Application
By incorporating multiple types of admixtures, composite cement benefits from their combined properties, helping to overcome the limitations of single-material cements. It offers early strength comparable to that of ordinary Portland cement, while exhibiting better long-term performance, durability, and resistance to sulfate attack compared to slag cement, pozzolanic cement, and fly ash cement. As a result, it is widely used in general construction projects, including residential buildings, commercial structures, and infrastructure developments where cost-effectiveness and performance are both important considerations.
