China Polar Scientific Research Robot Corps debuted in the Antarctic inland to undertake ice sheet detection mission

In the sky, a flying robot carrying a precision surveying instrument whizzes past and automatically takes a picture of the next high-definition glacier; on the ground, the roaming robot is advancing with enthusiasm, and the ice-detecting radar constantly scans the ice for several kilometers... This is not the plot in the science fiction movie, but the work scene of the 31st Antarctic expedition polar robot team in China.

In the 31st Antarctic expedition in China, the robotic corps consisting of fixed-wing flying robots, rotor-wing robots and ice-covered roaming robots is responsible for the detection of two inland ice sheets near Zhongshan Station. This means that the Chinese Polar Scientific Research Robot will be transferred from the experimental stage to the application stage for the first time.

The two flying robots mainly undertake ice observation tasks. The aerial camera, infrared radiometer, laser range finder and other equipment can be used to observe the topography, ice surface temperature and ice surface roughness of the ice sheet. The roaming robot is mainly responsible for the detection of the conditions under the ice surface. It is equipped with an ice-detecting radar independently developed by China. The detection depth is up to 4,000 meters, and the terrain and internal structure of the bottom of the ice sheet can be obtained.

At present, the aerial picture of the low-altitude fixed-wing flying robot is nearly 4,000, and the ultra-low-altitude flying-wing robot acquires the ice surface roughness measurement data with a precision of 10 km and the ice-covered roaming robot has completed the autonomous driving test.

According to Liang Jianhong, an executor of the project site and an associate professor at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the Antarctic inland has been blowing 6 to 7 winds all the year round, accompanied by fine sand-like snow, which has formed frequent gale weather. In this kind of weather, the human eye can't distinguish the ground and the sky, and it is easy to lose direction. The snow particles entrained by the strong wind easily enter the inside of the equipment and cause damage; the snow that is raised rapidly deposits snow hills after the strong wind, and the changing landscape It also increases the difficulty of robots working outdoors. To this end, R & D personnel specially designed high-tech "secret weapons" for robots.

The flying robot adopts dual ignition system design, which can effectively reduce the risk of air-extinguishing and can withstand the test of 9-level wind; the ice-covered roaming robot “body” wears laser radar, which can automatically detect obstacles and ice cracks in front, creating originality. The triangular track is more flexible than the integrated track steering of a typical snowmobile. Compared to general robots, polar robots can withstand low temperatures of minus 40 degrees Celsius.
