How to prevent pumpkin melon

The phenomenon where a pumpkin stops growing and becomes hard or shriveled when it reaches the size of a fist is known as "melon." This condition can significantly reduce yield and quality, so timely pesticide application is essential to prevent further damage.
The primary causes of pumpkin melon include excessively high temperatures, which hinder fruit development and lead to premature drying; over-fertilization, especially after harvest, when pruning is not done in time, causing excessive vine growth and diverting energy away from fruit development; and damage from pests or diseases that weaken the plant and affect its ability to support healthy fruit growth.
To avoid pumpkins turning into melons, several preventive measures should be taken. First, ensure the plants are resistant to heat and drought by using proper irrigation and mulching. Second, adjust cultivation practices based on the growth stage of the pumpkin. For overly vigorous plants, limit water and fertilizer, and implement strict pruning and pollination management. Remove excess side vines to encourage the development of female flowers on the main vines and control overall plant length. For weaker plants, apply targeted fertilizers to promote fruit growth. For plants affected by pests or diseases, use appropriate treatments. For example, insecticides like imidacloprid can effectively control aphids, while fungal infections such as powdery mildew can be treated with fungicides like Fuxing or World High-Level. It's also important to monitor for viral diseases transmitted by aphids and take preventive steps accordingly. Consistent monitoring and timely intervention are key to maintaining healthy pumpkin crops.
