Dalian Institute of Chemical Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences developed a new process for preparing flexible batteries

The active material coated inside the battery is a key component of the battery operation. Because the conventional battery has a fixed shape, the bonding between the active material and the conductive substrate is relatively firm. However, when the battery is flexible, the coated active material tends to fall off, which affects the normal use of the battery. In recent years, flexible wearable electronic devices and concepts have been rapidly developed, and preparation of batteries that do not fall off internal active materials during bending is a problem that needs to be solved urgently in the development of flexible devices.

Recently, the Research Institute of Energy Storage Technology of the Dalian Institute of Chemicals, Chinese Academy of Sciences, reported on a new process for preparing flexible batteries. They use electroless plating technology to achieve direct and firm bonding of active materials and conductive substrates. When the battery is randomly bent, active materials are not generated. Shedding, showing good flexibility, the battery can be applied to flexible electronic devices. Electroless plating technology is a relatively mature surface coating technology, widely used in chemical, aerospace, medical equipment and other fields, the technology has the advantages of uniform plating, flexible composition, suitable for non-metallic substrates. Conventional batteries use an adhesive to coat an active material on a conductive substrate. The research team changed the coating method and applied a metal film to the active material by electroless plating. The process technology has the advantages of low preparation cost and easy practical application, and lays a foundation for the future industrialization of flexible batteries.
