Installation and maintenance of anti-corrosion wood floors

Proper installation and maintenance of treated wood floors are essential to ensure their longevity and durability. Treated wood is processed with special preservatives to resist decay, insects, and weathering. It is commonly used in outdoor spaces such as decks, patios, garden paths, flower beds, and even in indoor areas like balconies. However, without proper handling and regular care, the lifespan of treated wood can be significantly reduced. Here are some key tips for installing and maintaining treated wood:

1. Before installation, allow the treated wood to acclimate to the outdoor environment by drying it in the open air. This helps reduce the risk of warping or cracking due to moisture differences between the wood and the surrounding conditions.

2. At the construction site, store the treated wood in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. Exposure to excessive heat and UV rays can degrade the protective chemicals and weaken the material over time.

3. Try to use the wood in its original size as much as possible. If cutting or drilling is necessary, make sure to reapply the preservative to all cut ends and holes to maintain protection against rot and pests.

4. When building a deck or terrace, use longer planks to minimize visible joints and improve aesthetics. Leave a small gap (around 5–10 mm) between the planks to allow for expansion and drainage, preventing water buildup that could lead to mold or rot.

5. Always use galvanized or stainless steel fasteners and hardware when assembling the structure. Avoid mixing different types of metals, as this can cause corrosion, which may eventually damage the wooden structure.

6. When drilling or cutting, start with a pilot hole using an electric drill before inserting screws. This prevents splitting or cracking, especially in softer woods that are more prone to damage during installation.

7. Even though treated wood is resistant to fungi and termites, it’s still recommended to apply a protective wood paint after the project is complete. Make sure the wood is fully dry before applying the paint. For outdoor use, choose a paint specifically designed for exterior wood. Shake the paint thoroughly before use, and allow at least 24 hours of direct sunlight to help the coating cure properly.
