New process for making hydrogen from silicon dust waste

A research team led by Professor Kobayashi Koichi of Osaka University in Japan announced that they have developed a technology that uses silicon dust to produce hydrogen in large quantities. This new process will not only help protect the environment, but will also contribute to the establishment of a society that uses hydrogen as its energy source.

The main raw material for solar panels is silicon. However, about 40% of silicon raw materials are used as dust scraps in the production of silicon wafers. At present, most companies use these silicon dusts as industrial waste, but the subsequent processing is very troublesome.

Kobayashi et al.'s method was to clean the silicon dust with a special process, and then finely grind it into particles of 10 nanometers (1 nanometer to 1 billionth of a meter), and then add the alkali solution. Silicon reacts with alkali solution to form silicate and hydrogen, and 1 gram of silicon powder can produce about 1.6 liters of hydrogen.

When hydrogen is burned, only water is generated, and no greenhouse gas carbon dioxide is produced. Therefore, many researchers are researching methods for replacing fossil fuels such as petroleum with hydrogen. However, most conventional hydrogen production processes still require fossil fuels and emit carbon dioxide, and the new method using silicon dust to make hydrogen avoids this problem.

The research team is ready to work with companies to make this technology practical. (Reporter Lan Jianzhong)

The International Maritime Organization (IMO), known as the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO) until 1982,[1] is a specialised agency of the United Nations responsible for regulating shipping. The IMO was established following agreement at a UN conference held in Geneva in 1948[2] and the IMO came into existence ten years later, meeting for the first time in 1959.[3] Headquartered in London, United Kingdom, the IMO currently has 174 member states and three associate members.
